Dinner and a Movie (Final Photo)

Title: Precious Journey
Movie Inspiration: Father of the Bride (1991)

Artist Statement:
The concept of this installation or piece shows a connection between the objects or characters that are separated or beginning to pull away from each other. The colors chosen represents this softness, purity or feminine feeling of the setting and this elegance with the wine glass and the 'diamond' ring. The 'diamond' ring is attached to two links due to its separation from the other side and the devotion to its current stance. The bubbles within the wine glass demonstrates the freedom and lightness of that object or character. The napkins are diagonally placed from the wine glass to create this picture of the growing tension between both sides while being secured by the chain. Overall, the straw paper in the middle of the plate is the main focal point of this piece by how it creates this relationship with the two chains that have been broken.

Gregor's Room

Dimensions of Biggest Object: 7 X 10.5

Artist Statement:

For this assignment, I have never read The Metamorphosis before so it was very interesting to figure out and think deeply on what was happening visually in the story. First starters, I thought the colors in Gregor's room were very dark and warm specifically, dark wood, black, and orange. I wanted to make his bed look like logs of wood almost like how a log cabin is built, stacked upon each other. I wanted to make the blanket and the pillows lighter colors to create this contrast of dark and light in which I saw in the story. There was light and dark moments in the story. I also wanted to make his furniture look dirty and unpleasant to view since he turned into this bug in the story. I added a lamp to his dresser to create some type of height in this piece since the furniture was at ground level. For Gregor, I saw him as some type of bug or other creature. I painted him using black, brown, and orange ink with bright orange wings to contrast. Overall, this story was very interesting to me and I was able to visualize Gregor and his room successfully while reading.

Figurative Bust Sculpture

Dimensions: 3.5 X 6.5

Artist Statement:
When deciding which social issue or issues to choose as inspiration for these figurative busts, I wanted both sculptures to go with each other, meaning, intertwine with each other conceptually. I chose two social issues that are very similar, the lack of women's empowerment in America and patriarchy in the workforce. The first sculpture resembles a women experiencing patriarchy in the workforce. I wanted to dress her as a business women with a pantsuit and glasses while sporting a tight bun hairstyle to be seen as professional in an office setting specifically. I intentionally did not give her a mouth because it is creating this picture that women sometimes do not have a voice specifically when working with men in an office setting. The second sculpture resembles a women who is being restrained and told "she can't". She is being restrained from what she wants to do and typically women are told "no" when trying to achieve something in their lives. Her mouth is covered with the words, "you can't". I chose the color red because the color usually represents a "stop" sign or signal. The stands that both sculptures are sitting on are covered in a white piece of cloth with words written in black. The written words on the cloth are hurtful words that are usually said to women. I used the words "worthless", "listen", "stupid", etc.; to emphasize what are said to women maybe in the workforce or outside of the workforce. I chose to write the words in black because it creates this dark and bold effect especially on white cloth. Overall, I wanted to create the lack of women's empowerment and patriarchy in the workforce visually because what women may experience sometimes does happen behind the scenes or closed doors and I wanted to bring awareness to these issues as a woman in America.

Touch Assignment

                                                       Swaddled

                                                   Digital Collage

"As the fetus grows in the womb, surrounded by amniotic fluid, it feels liquid warmth, the heartbeat, the inner surf of the mother, and floats in a wonderful hammock that rocks gently as she walks."

A Natural History of The Senses, Diane Ackerman, p. 78

Statement:

I was inspired to create a digital college of a baby in the womb, but I thought of twins in the womb which adds more of a first touch than anything since two beings are together in their mother's womb before they are born into the world. The original photo was photographed by Anne Geddes and then I added the white blanket to show the warmth and how these two babies are swaddled together in the womb as it's like their first touch before they enter the world.

Express Uniqueness
Graphite Drawing
8" x 10"

"These days to shock the burgeoisie and establish their own identity, as every generation must, many young men and women wear their hair as a freeform sculpture, with lacquered spikes, close-cropped patterns that resemble a formal garden maze, and colors borrowed from an aviary or spray painted alley."
A Natural History of The Senses, Diane Ackerman, p. 85

Statement:

I was inspired to do a drawing of a man and a woman with hair that is unique almost like a freeform sculpture described in the quote. A freeform sculpture has unique shapes that are different and special. I wanted to create a drawing that emphasizes how a man and a woman express themselves through their hair with colors, textures, and the way the may style their hair. The swirls I incorporated in the woman's hair was inspiration from a freeform sculpture I saw, along with the man's beard and his hair on top of his head. Touch is very unique when talking about hair and the different textures each person has.
